Bloodsimple – Red Harvest
Reprise/Bullygoat Records
By Robin Steeley
Often referred to as American metalcore, New York's Bloodsimple are back with an eagerly awaited new album. Red Harvest, their sophomore effort, follows their critically-acclaimed debut A Cruel World, which was also released on Chad Gray's imprint label, Bullygoat Records. I was a huge fan of the first album. It was insanely heavy and full of all the elements I love about music, and I could only hope that their latest captured that same magic. The first track, "Ride With Me," starts out with a spoken segment that becomes increasingly disturbing and soon segues into title track "Red Harvest" with its driving rhythms and scathing abrasive lyrics, intermixed with sick breakdowns. This, along with a recurring lyrical theme of anger, murder and revenge, carries throughout all eleven tracks, especially the unmerciful riffs in "Suck It Up," and the unbelievably heavy "Death From Above."
The CD was produced by Machine who is well-known for his work with bands like Eighteen Visions, Every Time I Die and Lamb of God. The production breaks barriers, but it's almost too perfect. This work is classic Bloodsimple but with a more mature, polished sound. I have to say that it didn't reach out and completely annihilate me the way that A Cruel World did, but it's still an excellent follow-up. I have a feeling it will grow on me the same way the first ultimately infected me. There is something that sets Bloodsimple apart, and I'm interested to see what they will bring to the table in the future.
